We are off to Arnhem Land with Plastic Fantastic

The Arnhem Land Progress Association

Modfab is collaborating with the Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation to bring 3D Printing and CAD training to 34 Indigenous Leaders and Balanda in Milingimbi and Ramingining.

The Arnhem Land Progress Association has invited Modfab to Milingimbi, an island off Arnhem Land about 440 kilometres east of Darwin to teach aspects of 3d printing, computer aided drawing and STEM technology principles.

The project is “Fantastic Plastic” and has support from the government.

Fantastic Plastic has three core goals:

1) to provide rewards for school attendance;
2) to educate Indigenous Elders and the community in 3D Printing & CAD Technology;

3) to develop a recycling scheme to turn waste plastic into 3D Printing Filament and then into products which can be sold at the stores.

The flagship program on Milingimbi — an island off Arnhem Land about 440 kilometres east of Darwin — turns trash to treasure using sophisticated computer programs.

Arnhem Land Progress Association (ALPA) project coordinator Lisa Somerville came up with the initiative and implemented it this year in Milingimbi.
